What is a Blackjack Tournament?

Blackjack Tournaments are Blackjack Competitions. Typically, they consist of 3 to 20 rounds of play, with tables of around 6 players contending against each other. At the completion of each round, 1 or 2 players from each table will advance to the next round of play. This knockout style of play continues until there are only two players left.

Each round consists of a set number of hands and all the players begin the round with an equal amount of chips. These chips may either be live money chips with a real cash value or, more commonly, are preset tournament chips with no cash value. At the end of the round, the player or players with the highest amount of playing chips, moves to the next round. Usually, in a round there are anywhere from 15 to 30 hands.

The tournament starts where each player receives one card from a standard deck of 52 cards. The player who holds an Ace will start the hand. If no one receives an Ace card then the player with the highest card will begin. A button is placed on the table in front of a player who is to be first base for that hand. The button then keeps rotating consecutively around the table to the next player with each following hand.

The prize money for a tournament is usually 100% of the entry fees paid by the players.

For smaller tournaments entry fee may be as low as $10, and prize money might be $500 or $1000 for the final winner. Most tournaments give away prizes for at least 6 places too. For bigger tournaments there can be an entry fee of $300-$500, with a proportionately larger payout. Then we have tournaments where entry fees goes up to $1000 or even more and featured prize could be of over a million dollars.

…it’s very exciting stuff!!

(Please Note: Tournament Rules may vary from casino to casino. Please check with your tournament provider for exact rules, regulations and prizes).

Tournament Strategy – The Golden Rules of Multiplayer BJ Tournaments.

In the world of Blackjack Tournaments, players who are well versed in Tournament Strategy have a major advantage over other inexperienced players who know little abou this important facet of tournament play.

Listed below are some key strategy’s designed to improve your tournament play and keep you on top of the leaderboard.

Don’t Bet too Small

Tournament Blackjack is all about you and the other players, not the dealer. To win the tournament you have to win more money than your competitors. That won’t happen if you are too conservative with your betting.

Don’t Rely on Luck

There is a skill involved in playing Tournament Blackjack. Of course there is a luck factor just like traditional blackjack, but if you rely solely on luck you will lose. Study your
Blackjack Basic Strategy charts and apply them religiously throughout your game.

Don’t Bet too Big

Just as with lack of confidence, overconfidence can finish your game real quick. Don’t be afraid to make a large but just be sure that it’s based on a carefully calculated decision. Betting large amounts of chips, hand after hand, will soon fall down if you happen to hit a bad run of cards.

Don’t Follow the Pack

This is a common mistake for a lot of beginners, both in traditional blackjack and tournament blackjack. Just because the other players are betting big doesn’t mean you have to do the same. The one time you don’t follow the group may just be the time that the dealer hits blackjack and wipes out your competitors. Just consider how many chips you have, your betting strategy and the goals you need to achieve for each hand. Then bet accordingly.

Take Calculated Risks

You’ll never win at Tournament BJ if you don’t take a few calculated risks. Don’t go overboard, but every now and then – when the cards are favourable and you feel that luck is on your side – take a risk. It’s a sure fire way of taking the lead!

Don’t be Afraid to Bet Big

Big bets win. All the big tournament champs know it. A large well placed bet at the right time can be the difference between being knocked out and remaining on the leaderboard. Once again, just be sure that the bet is a well calculated one.

Be Consistent, but not Predictable

Choose an amount, make that your average bet and then adjust your bet off of that. Place bigger bets when it’s smart to do so and smaller ones when needed. Above all, keep the other players in your tournament guessing. You don’t want them to trump you because they know your betting style.

Try these strategies at your next tournament and with proper application, discipline and perseverance you should soon be seeing your name at the top of the leaderboard.
